About the Vermont Jeep Association: Your Gateway to Responsible Off-Road Adventure

Since 2001, the Vermont Jeep Association has been Vermont's premier community for responsible off-road enthusiasts, bringing together families and adventurers who share a passion for exploring the Green Mountain State's rugged backcountry. We're more than just a club—we're stewards of Vermont's trails, advocates for responsible recreation, and a tight-knit community dedicated to preserving off-road access for future generations.

Whether you're a seasoned rock crawler or someone who's never left the pavement, our mission remains the same: to foster a vibrant community of responsible 4WD enthusiasts who explore Vermont's backcountry with respect, preserve trail access through active stewardship, and strengthen connections between off-roaders, landowners, and the natural landscape we share.

About the Vermont Jeep Association

Founded in 2001, the Vermont Jeep Association began as a small group of like-minded individuals who recognized the need for organized, responsible off-road recreation in Vermont. Over more than two decades, we've grown into a respected statewide organization that serves as a model for how off-road clubs can operate with integrity and environmental consciousness.

Despite our name featuring "Jeep," we welcome all off-road vehicles—from Toyota 4Runners and Chevy Tahoes to Ford Broncos and everything in between. What matters isn't the badge on your grille, but your commitment to responsible recreation and respect for Vermont's natural spaces.

Our club is proudly family-oriented, recognizing that some of the best adventures happen when multiple generations come together to explore the outdoors. We've designed our activities and culture to be welcoming to families, couples, and individuals alike, creating an inclusive environment where everyone can learn, grow, and contribute to our mission.

We enthusiastically welcome both beginners and experienced off-roaders. Our seasoned members take pride in mentoring newcomers, sharing knowledge about vehicle preparation, trail etiquette, and the skills needed to navigate Vermont's challenging terrain safely and responsibly.

What We Do

The Vermont Jeep Association organizes a diverse range of activities throughout the year, with our primary focus on organized off-road rides during the summer and fall months when Vermont's backcountry is most accessible.

Trail Rides and Adventures

Our organized rides span Vermont and New Hampshire, offering something for every skill level and vehicle capability. We carefully plan routes that range from:

  • Stock vehicle-friendly Class 4 roads perfect for beginners or those with unmodified vehicles
  • Intermediate trails that challenge drivers while remaining accessible to most 4WD vehicles
  • Advanced rock crawling and technical terrain requiring winches, lockers, and significant modifications

Every ride is led by experienced members who know the terrain, understand group dynamics, and prioritize safety above all else. We provide detailed pre-ride briefings, maintain communication throughout the journey, and ensure no one gets left behind.

Commitment to Legal and Ethical Recreation

The Vermont Jeep Association operates under a strict code of ethics that sets us apart from casual off-road groups. We adhere to the principles of Tread Lightly! (www.treadlightly.org), the nationally recognized program that promotes responsible outdoor recreation.

Our rides are conducted exclusively on:

  • Public Class 4 roads in Vermont and Class 6 roads in New Hampshire
  • Private land with explicit owner permission, maintaining positive relationships with landowners
  • Designated trails where off-road recreation is legally permitted

This commitment to legal access isn't just about following rules—it's about preserving these opportunities for future generations of off-road enthusiasts.

Community Involvement

The Vermont Jeep Association recognizes that with the privilege of accessing Vermont's beautiful backcountry comes the responsibility to protect and preserve it. Our community involvement extends far beyond recreational activities to encompass meaningful stewardship and advocacy work.

Environmental Stewardship

We actively participate in trail maintenance and conservation projects, working alongside land managers, conservation organizations, and fellow outdoor enthusiasts to:

  • Maintain and improve trail conditions
  • Prevent erosion and environmental damage
  • Remove illegal dumping and debris from backcountry areas
  • Support habitat conservation efforts

Green Up Vermont Partnership

As proud supporters of Green Up Vermont, we participate annually in the state's signature environmental cleanup event. Our members can be found throughout Vermont's backcountry areas, collecting litter and debris that others have left behind, demonstrating our commitment to leaving every place better than we found it.

Landowner Relations

We understand that positive relationships with private landowners are essential to maintaining access to Vermont's diverse terrain. Our members work collaboratively with property owners to:

  • Respect property boundaries and usage agreements
  • Assist with land management projects when requested
  • Provide education about responsible recreation practices
  • Serve as ambassadors for the broader off-road community

Partners

The Vermont Jeep Association doesn't operate in isolation. We're proud members of a broader network of organizations working to promote responsible off-road recreation and preserve access to public lands.

Our key partnership with the Northeast Association of 4WD Clubs connects us to a regional network of like-minded organizations, allowing us to:

  • Share best practices and successful programs
  • Coordinate advocacy efforts on regional issues
  • Participate in larger conservation and access projects
  • Learn from the experiences of other established clubs

We also maintain collaborative relationships with local land managers, conservation groups, and government agencies, ensuring that the voice of responsible off-roaders is heard in important land-use decisions.

Required Equipment

Safety is our top priority, and proper equipment is essential for safe backcountry travel. The Vermont Jeep Association maintains mandatory equipment requirements for all club rides and activities.

These requirements aren't arbitrary rules—they're carefully developed standards based on decades of experience in Vermont's challenging terrain. Required equipment ensures that:

  • All participants can handle emergency situations
  • Vehicles are properly prepared for off-road conditions
  • Environmental impact is minimized
  • Group safety and cohesion are maintained

Our equipment requirements are scaled to match the difficulty level of specific rides, ensuring that beginners aren't overwhelmed while maintaining appropriate safety standards for more challenging terrain.

For detailed information about what equipment you'll need for different types of rides, please visit our Mandatory Equipment Requirements page.

Club By-Laws

The Vermont Jeep Association operates under comprehensive by-laws that govern our organization, establish our procedures, and ensure we remain true to our mission and values. These by-laws reflect our commitment to transparency, democratic governance, and responsible operation.

Our by-laws address important topics including:

  • Membership requirements and responsibilities
  • Organizational structure and leadership
  • Meeting procedures and decision-making processes
  • Code of conduct and disciplinary procedures
  • Financial management and transparency

We encourage all members and prospective members to familiarize themselves with our governing documents. You can review our complete by-laws in our 2025 By-Laws document.
